The origin of BLT Charcoal Company began for us after the snowstorm of 2021 brought
single digit temperatures and fifteen inches of snow for an extended period of time to
Gillett, Arkansas. This weather is almost unheard of in our southeastern part of the
state. After the snow had finally cleared and the weather had warmed a little, we were
grilling steaks for our family from our freezer beef operation. While enjoying the fruits of
our labor, we reflected on how hard we had worked to keep the day-to-day cattle
operation going. As anyone who has ever raised cattle knows, this included starting
cantankerous equipment that did not want to work in the cold temperatures, transporting
and feeding hay as well as supplements, breaking ice for the cattle’s water source
multiple times daily, and making sure the cattle stayed healthy and safe through the
storm. However, we were disappointed to find the flavor of the steaks that we had
worked so hard to produce was masked by the charcoal we were using. We began to
wonder if we could make a charcoal using locally sourced wood that would allow only
the flavor of the meat to be front and center. After many attempts and much trial and
error using small batch charcoal methods, BLT Charcoal Company was born.
